Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin

Dr. Adnan Shihab-Eldin is the former Acting Secretary General and Director of Research of OPEC. He is currently the Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and served also as a member of its Board. He served earlier as the Director of the Division for Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Department of Technical Cooperation, at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. Prior to joining IAEA he served as Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology (Cairo) and as the UNESCO Representative in Egypt, Sudan, and Yemen. Before that, he was the Director General of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, serving concurrently until 1980 as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Kuwait University.

Dr. Shihab-Eldin is a Research Associate at Oxford Energy Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) and has been a member of the International Advisory Council (IAC) of King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC) since its launch. He served as Board member for numerous organizations and companies such as Board member of the Al-Dorra Oil Services Company, SBC Energy Institute, the Board of Trustees of the American University of Kuwait, the Gulf Research Center Foundation (Geneva), the Kuwait National Nuclear Energy Committee, and the National Technology Enterprise Company (Kuwait).

Dr. Shihab-Eldin graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering, a M.Sc. degree, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. Prior his career with international organizations, Dr. Shihab-Eldin held various teaching and research appointments covering the physical and engineering sciences, and energy technology, economics, and policy, at a number of universities and research centers in Kuwait, the United States and Europe, including Kuwait University, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of California at Berkeley (California), the European Nuclear Research Center in Geneva (Switzerland), and the Energy and Environment Policy Center at Harvard University, in Cambridge (Massachusetts).

Dr. Shihab-Eldin has published extensively, including research papers, articles and reports; he has also authored or contributed to chapters to several books. His publications cover Energy Policy, Economics and Technology; Energy and the Environment; Oil Markets; Renewable; Nuclear Science and Nuclear Power; Management and Development of Science & Technology and Higher Education in Developing Countries and other related fields.
